Maybe your J would like that kind more? We also have had him on antidepressants for a couple of months now, and that seems to have helped even more than the fancy food. But when I tried that, my cat scratched out half the fur on his face and head in the ensuing allergic reaction. Not a good look for him, poor dear. He isn't super hardy to begin with, which is probably why he requires more coddling. But I picked him and am attached to him now so them's the breaks.
